Why do you need a marine bilge pump

Why do you need a marine bilge pump

  • 2021/06/08

Bilge pumps have existed since ancient times. These are the only pumps carried in the past-showing their importance for navigation. There may be many pumps on modern ships, but the bilge pump is still one of the most important.

Here are three reasons why every ship needs a marine bilge pump:

Marine bilge pump prevents flooding Leaks, drainage and flushing fluids will all enter the ship’s bilge wells. If left unchecked, these wells will eventually overflow and overflow into the engine room. This can lead to many safety hazards and other problems.

If the oil and water rise, it may enter the machine and damage them. In addition, if a compartment enters water, it will affect the balance of the boat.

This is why it is important to empty the bilge well in ships.

For leisure boats, the risk is even higher. There are no deep bilge wells, and only a little extra water is needed to reach your ship’s electronic equipment. Heavy rain or heavy waves may be enough to destroy your ship system.

But with a working bilge pump, you don’t have to worry about water ingress.

Most ship bilge pumps are equipped with automatic float switches. Whenever the water level rises above a certain level, this switch will turn on the pump. In this way, you don't always have to check your bilge.

Bilge pump can save your boat from sinking In addition to the daily role of removing water from bilge wells, bilge pumps can also be lifeguards in emergency situations.

If your boat has a small hole and water is pouring in, the bilge pump can spray the water out faster than the water in (depending on the size of the hole and the GPM of the pump).

Removal of water ingress allows you to repair holes or perform emergency docking. Note: You should never rely on your bilge pump to stay afloat. If your boat has a hole, repair it immediately.

It is strongly recommended to install the designated emergency bilge pump with the highest capacity. You can also use ballast water pumps and fire pumps to help pump out water in an emergency.

If this hole is too large for your marine bilge pump to handle, it can at least buy you enough time to safely abandon the ship.

Bilge pumps are required by law

It is not only unwise to venture into the deep sea without a marine bilge pump, it is also illegal. Maritime law strictly requires ensuring that ships have an excellent bilge system to deal with emergencies—especially passenger ships.
